Description
Large format hardcover, folio bound in red leather with five raised bands and gilt decorated spine, title in gold on upper cover. Marbled end-papers. All edges gilt. 288 pages. This is volume II of the eventual five volumes which made up the Picturesque Europe series, complete in itself. No volume number internally or on leather spine. Illustrated with 13 full page steel plates, all with tissue guards intact and over 150 engravings on wood. First British edition (1877), with no publishing date present [after the original published by Appleton in America]. Contents include 14 chapters by six different authors: Old English Homes; The West Coast of Ireland; Border Castles and Counties; Cathedral Cities; The Grampians; Oxford; The West Coast of Wales; Cambridge; Scotland (from Loch Ness to Loch Eil); The South Coast of devonshire; The Lake Country; South Wales; North Devon; The Isle of Wright. No previous ownership marks. Covers show some age darkening and extremities rubbed, mostly at tips and spine bands. Blank prelims show foxing and there is very light sporadic foxing to several pages and one or two plates, though confined to margins and not affecting images or text. A tight, sound, clean copy in a still quite handsome late Victorian binding. Very good. A large, very heavy book, additional postage will be required.
