Rebound in red cloth with author and title stamped in gold on spine. Contains frontis and 2 pages of works published by Derby and Miller appended at rear. Cloth as new, text shows very light sporadic foxing. Originally published as “Scenes and Adventures in Central America” [i.e. Louisiana, Texas, and northern Meixco] in 1852. Howes mentions that th e second edition, published in Auburn, sees the authors name changed from Frederick to Francis and that the book was “apparently translated from some book by the German Karl Postl. The 1852 preface, however, gives the present volume as based upon the German works of Charles Sealsfield. A fascinating collection of tales about the old West including chapters on “The Lynch Law” in Texas and “The Texas Ranger’s Best Shot.” Howes H191; Sabin 30344
