Hardcover, publisher’s indigo vellum cloth; upper cover framed in blind with double rule and lettered in gilt, with indigo, green and gold vignette. Spine lettered in gold. Top edge gilt. 217 pages, plus 6 pages of publisher’s ads appended. First edition, first printing [October 1916 on copyright page] with publisher’s perforated stamp on title – “ADVANCE COPY FOR REVIEW NOT FOR SALE.” Published in a print run of only 1200, it is not known how many advanced copies were distributed. Jeffers’ second book, but his first to be commercially published by a major publishing house. Housed in a modern slipcase and chemise, leather backed with decorations and gilt lettering. A superb copy with just a touch of wear to cloth. A fine copy in a fine half-leather slipcase.
