Hardcover, green cloth binding with beveled edges blocked in gold and black, with recessed oblong oval on front board containing a white enameled angel and lyre against a black and gold background. All edges gilt. 642 pages. Index of First Lines. Illustrated with steel engraved plates. Text pages surrounded by wide printed pictorial borders ranging in color from green to blue to sepia. Circa 1880 with contemporary gift inscription on first blank after end-paper dated “New Year, 1882”. No previous ownership marks. Professionally re-enforced inner hinges, complimenting original brown end-papers. A clean, square, unmarked copy. Text and illustrations clean with no foxing. Cloth covers show only incidental rubbing to raised gold lettering. A very nice example of mid-Victorian book-binding in a wonderfully evocative cloth binding. Very good or better.
