Description
Hardcover, half leather with raised spine lettered and decorated in gold, over marbled paper covered boards. 560 pages. Contains the six monthly issues from July through December, 1846. No previous ownership marks. Moderate foxing to end-papers and prelims, with light (minimal) sporadic foxing to text. Volume is tightly bound and presents a handsome shelf appearance. Text is quite clean and readable. A wonderfully droll window into the interests and activities of mid nineteenth-century New Yorker’s, from articles on spotting the causes of early consumption to travel sketches, religious commentaries and even a verse contribution entitled “Napoleon at St. Helena”. Cosmo it’s not, but then you do not have to wade countless advertisements to read the latest cutting edge literary offerings from 1846 New York. Very good.
