Description
Hardcover, half red leather over marbled paper covered boards. Raised spine, marbled end-papers and all edges marbled. 496 pages. Illustrated with 20 engravings on heavy stock. First edition. No previous ownership marks. The authors were “…a Quaker couple, married in 1822, who between them wrote some 180 books for children.” Mary Hewitt issued the first English translation of Hans Christian Andersen, while William preferred prose and wrote mainly adventure stories for boys. This collaboration is a very nice example of mid-nineteenth century juvenile literature. Outer jints rubbed, as well as wear to outer extremities of boards. A sound, clean, internally unmarked copy. All twenty plates are clean, with no foxing, which is usual for this title. A good+ or better copy.
