Description

Harcover, dark blue cloth, no dust-jacket. 128pp., Translated from the German by Arthur Chambers and Frederic Appleby Holt. Illustrated with 10 photographic plates and 2 battle sketch maps. Second edtion, originally published 1921. Book protected by reinforced mylar cover, with inserted artwork and title printed on spine in red. Blue cloth covers quite mottled, especially at spine and front board. Edges of bulded sheets foxed. Cloth covers are sound and interior is clean. No previous ownership marks. The author was First Gunney Officier on the battle-cruiser SMS Derffinger during the Battle of Jutland. A scarce first hand account of the battle from the German perspective. The author purports to be “objective” as to the military account of the battle, but the preface and general tone of the narrative portray a frightening window into the racial attitudes, jingoistic intensity, and vengefulness of one segment of German society at the dawn of the Weimar Republic. An important naval monograph, but also a telling sociological primary source in explaining the rise of the National Socialist Democrtatic Party. Good.
