Description
Hardcover, large format quarto bound in publisher’s decorative cloth stamped in burgundy and gold, with white, delicately marbled silk moire end-papers. All edges gilt. 203 pages. With 72 illustrations throughout. Reprint edition (1884), originally published 1882. The poets selected are predominately British and male ranging from Spenser, Shakespeare and Milton to a heavier concentration of 19th century Romantics [Wordsworth, Byron, Shelley, Coleridge and Keats] and others [Scott, Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, et alia]. Several American selections include poems by Bryant, Poe, Lowell and Holmes. No previous ownership marks. Abrasion to cloth at fore-edges of both boards, heavier on upper cover and very mild foxing to prelims and title. Else book is sound, square and tight with no writhing, underling or foxing internally and decorative cloth still quite attractive. Very good.
