First Edition. This is the first American edition, in the original pinkish brown cloth, of these sketches. This volume consists of three volumes of “Sketches”– of Young Ladies, of Young Gentlemen, and of Young Couples. As explained in the publisher’s advertisement, “Sketches of Young Ladies was actually written in the 1830’s by another writer with the nom de plume of ‘Quiz’; Dickens then wrote the other two, published in England in 1838 and 1840 respectively. This volume includes the original volumes’ illustrations by ‘Phiz’, [Hablot K. Browne.] Front pastedwon bears an old school award label and front endpaper is cracked. Else a fine copy in the original cloth, quite uncommon in this condition and in this variant binding, as most copies are found in the green cloth. No prioirty given in Gimbel. Podeschi D73.
