Description
Original Cloth. First edition. Variant binding? Heavily beveled brown cloth stamped in gold lettering and with war ax on lower backstrip. However, evidence that cloth may have been blue and turned brown, since lower corner of rear cover shows small patch of blue. Book was originally published in blue cloth. Endpapers have swan and sailing ship motif. One of th e most successful novels of the nineteenth century and the progenitor of the ‘lost race genre’, this was actually the second novel to feature the title character, Quatermain having appeared also in “King Solomon’s Mines”, published the year before in 1886. Cloth shows several small scraps and paper cracked on inner front hinge, albeit both hinges sound. with boards firmly attached. A very good copy of this adventure novel.
