Original issue of the {weekly?} periodical “The New World,” published in New York City, Saturday, December 28, 1844. Twenty-eight pages, the first seven of which contain an original sketch by Lincoln Ramble entitled ‘Sequel to “The Christmas Carol”‘. Actually, Ramble’s pen was incited more by Dickens’ recent publication of “American Notes”, than by the eponymous title. His sardonic reaction to Dickens’ rather unflattering depiction of the United States was typical of many American writers, and is actually quite mild compared to the vitriolic condemnations leveled by some aggrieved colonials. Apparently extracted from a bound volume, with stab marks visible on spine. This issue also contains a chapter of Eugene Sue’s popular novel, “The Wandering Jew.” A very scarce piece of Dickensiana, not in Gimbel. Small stamp of the ‘Long Island Historical Society’ on lower blank margin of last page. A clean, unmarked copy of this fragile item. Very good.
