Hardcover, rebound in later nineteenth century quarter black leather over coarse purple grained cloth, with five raised spine bands and six compartments heavily decorated in gilt. 625 pages. All edges marbled. Illustrated with engravings by H.K. Brown [Phiz]. First edition. Collated with all illustrations present, 39 plates as listed plus vignette title page. An early issue, bound from the parts with most all textual points called for by Smith present [only corrections were those made to contents page, newly supplied for binding in book form]. including three line errata on page xiv and Rigaud instead of Blandois on pages 469-473. Previous owner’s name on second blank (in pencil) and moderate marginal toning to some plates, text generally clean.. Overall a clean unmarked copy of a title usually found with heavy foxing.
